History shows that it doesn't.
Alcohol prohibition in America in the 1920's led to gang warfare and drove drinking underground. The cost of illegal liqour became sky high, leading to the production of "bath tub" gin (methyl alcohol rather than ethyl) which could blind you or send you mad . Desperate people (alcoholics) actually started mugging others for the price of a drink.
Speak Easy's became popular and officials became corrupt (taking bribes etc).

The prohibition of drugs is following the same pattern.

The irony is, that the efforts to prohibit smoking and drinking through the back door, are targetting products that are legally sold.

People should be allowed to kill themselves in any way they wish.

What hypocrisy.

Prohibition simply gives criminal elements the chance to thrive.

No I think history has proved so far that prohibition doesn't work, I agree that if people want to kill themselves as they wish that's fine, but those same people would be making life very hard for the ones that do not do drugs, drink, smoking or any other illegal matter they could get their hands on and it is those people that need to be protected.

Prohibition does not work because of the sin nature of man. Mankind is naturally disobedient; therefore, any attempt to regulate behavior is going to be met with resistance. Every person thinks that he/she has the right way and the better way, and he/she builds their agenda based upon this belief. Even when people agree they disagree. There is no uniformity in philosophy; thus, everyone does what is right in his/her own eyes. This is why the world is in such a mess.

Yes it does work. in fact it works very well for those who profit from it.

From the producers of the substance through to the policeman, the candlestick maker all the way through to the undertaker and the grave digger and so forth.
BECAUSE
To tell a man to turn right is to bait him to instinctivly want to turn left to see why.

No, it is fatally flawed as it requires complete control over everyone at all times.
