Always answer the door in your shoes and coat.
Then, if its someone you dont want to see you can say youre on your way out. If its someone you do want to see then you can say you have just got in!!

I think it should be the man asleep on your counch who should be worrying about etiquette, not you..... Wake him up and turf him out, if he's getting in the way! He can go to sleep on his own couch.
It depends on the visitor - you will treat a friend you have had for 10 years differently to an aquaintance you have known only for a few months.
But if someone drops by without notice, and it isn't convenient, it really is OK for you to say "lovely to see you - I wish we could chat over a cup of coffee, but I've got some errands to run...."

It's up to you how you manage you and your friends.
But if there's little/minimal value in having her around, make an issue of it. Maybe in a light jokey way to start with; ask her if she ever draws breath; put your hand up and ask for permission to speak, etc. Alternatively - a) don't invite her around or b) make your excuses and head on out if she turns up on spec.
If that doesn't work - simply tell her. You like to chat and have conversation and chat - not be talked to like a child. She'll probably take umbridge - but sod it.
The same with Chum on your couch. It's kinda taking the michael if somebody turns up and crashes out on your sofa. If you don't mind, you don't mind - but they're kinda taking liberties. Put together a list of small DIY activities so each time he pops round - get him to earn his doze.
It does sound like you're too nice to me and people are used to you being consistently around.

WHAT your visitor is asleep on your couch....OMG wake him up and tell him to get his *** out of there, how cheeky is that, if someone came to my home and crashed out on the couch i would not be too happy about it....i would be onto him like a shot...get the lazy git out and tell him to go home and sleep in his own bed...dont allow someone to use your home like a doss house....thats totally disrespectful...as for the mouthy one...if she calls again, just dont open the door, these people are using your home as a call in center for the bored and lazy....nip it in the bud....this is your home, and people should respect it as yor home and not their own...how cheeky is that

Visitors dont just come round and sleep on your sofa. He should be making an effort. warm him next time he does it you will shave off one of his eye brows. or rest his hand in a bowl of warm water. or put shaving foam on his hand and tickle his nose with a feather.
But in all seriousness it is rude for a guest to come round and sleep on your sofa . unless they stayed the night but even then they shouldnt stay there all day .
Do what my mum used to do when i wanted to stay in bed all day, she used to start hoovering my room.
Dont put up with it.

It depends on the visitor. If he is really close to you, you should treat him nicely and receive him accordingly. In case if he is not so close, still you can treat him nicely, but with a limit. Even if a stranger visit you, and if you deaal with him decently, it will definitely improve your image

I have a friend that sometimes falls asleep when he has drank too much. I find it very rude and if he doesnt wake up and socialise I ask him to leave.
