It's not always safe meeting others this day and age. Throwing caution to the wind may come back and hit you in the face. You don't have to judge a book by its cover, but you might want to read the preface to make sure it's the right topic.

People make judgments when they don't know a person as part of trying to understand who a person is. If you have nothing other than how a person looks to know who they are you have to compare the way they look to your past experiences. Though its not always accurate or nice its all a person has to go on until they get more info. That is just the way the mind of a human works. If you saw a person go into a bank wearing a ski mask you would think they were going to rob the bank right? You can't just say, " well don't judge him, lets wait and see what he does". I think its people who get judged wrong in a bad way that give judging things and people a bad name. If you see the cover of a book but its locked shut what else are you going to judge it by?

Just because it's a common phrase doesn't mean it's true.
You can judge a book by it's cover, or at least get a damn good idea about it. Just walk into any bookshop and look at the books. You can tell which ones are kids books, thrillers, chick-lit etc.
To a certain extent the same can be said about people, the clothes they wear can give clues to their interests, facial expressions and general behaviour all give hints to who a person is.

It is neither. First impressions are natural. When you meet someone for the first time it is only natural that you form a first impression. That's why it pays to "put your best foot forward". First impressions usually does not reveal the "real person" and should not be the limit of ones opinion.
Thus, in essence you would not be judging a book by its cover.

That is one of my favourite sayings.. and I get judged by my cover daily. I am not a slim woman, nor am I obese, but I am fat. When I got out, very few men look in my direction, however, when I chat to men on line, they are all over me.. so I must have a nice personality.. now isn't my content the better part of me, because anyones cover will fade in time, but the inside lives on

its all to do with not pre judging a person before you have really got to know them, because at the end of the day all though they may have 2 arms with 20 toes on this doesnt mean that there are a bad person or you have to stay away, and sometimes when you have the most pretty of girls that you think look real hot in realitty they may be the nastiest piece of work going.

Ive "hurd" the words? Hurd? Hurd?! Herded? You shepherded the words "dont judge a book by its cover", and you made a sentance, and a deeply profound one, too. Good work, man.

People do it because stereotypes have proved to be a useful tool for identifying people you will or won't be able to have successful social interactions with.
Living in urban, mixed societies today makes them less useful as they are no longer particularly reliable indicators of what kind of person somebody is, but they have had (and maybe still do have) their uses, as long as you understand the limitations.

like a book you cannot tell what a person is like without first getting to know them for who they are.

It is lack of perception, and given more time, the judgment is relatively better !
