Many years ago I watched on while my brothers got hit by my Dad.
Slapped by hand, sometimes by a belt or wooden spoon.
It never occured to me (till your question) that there was anything I could or should (for that matter) do.
I was younger than both my brothers.
At 5-10 years of age one doesn't have a lot of power do they?
You raise some great points.
Children's rights weren't an issue back when I was a child.
Heck, women's rights were still being trodden on.

That depends how physical and if it turns sexual. I am not one for physical punishment, but; I am also not one for children running the household. If you are a sibling and you think you can stop the beating then by all means try and do so. Sometimes somebody saying stop is all that is necessary to stop someone who has forgotten to stop on their own. Sometimes that may come back to bite you in the backside. At any rate, if you go outside the family then you may not be able to save the family. That is the jeapardy you face. The sibling has to do what the sibling feels they have to do. They just have to make the best judgement for them.

Well it's like this. What the hell can you do? They're parents, big and scary. My sister used to sit back and watch me get punished and I also did the same from time to time but I was very softhearted and I would own up to her punishments because my heart would break to see her upset far worse than any flogging with the stick ever could.

When children are young, the are vulnerable. We unfortunately, do not get to choose who our parents are. Just thank God that if you are "lucky", you have loving caring parents and this "issue" does not arise. Otherwise - depending on the severity and regularity - you just have to plead and hope that sense prevail. Ultimately, you will have to make a choice when grown up! Confide in a youth counselor - one you can trust. Best Regards

Um, that would depend, if the physical punishment in beating, no, the child should probably be calling protective services. Beating a child is never ok. Spanking is depatable, but beating is illegal.
