yes you should grip it firmly but carress it from the base of the shaft up th the tip of the head in a slow rhythmic fashion only speeding up when lubricant is applied for a good polish!

I found a good tight hold on it works good , but loosen the grip a little when sliding down . Tighten on the up stroke , but not to fast .Every now and then smack the shaft and repeat the process until satisfied. This done from starting at the base while holding towards the ground.

Nope...head first and down.
That way, any residual dirt left on the cloth doesn't scratch the part that makes contact with the ball.
