Housework isn't always fun, but there are ways to make it better.
The motivation needs to come from you to keep it clean. Maybe your standards are too high (excessive messiness is a sign of perfectionism too) I'm not saying museum perfect, I mean sanitary and functional most of the time with systems in place that you can deal with chaos as it happens. That is all you need to strive for, a home that allows you to take care of it with the least amount of stress. Either you know that clean homes run better and want that or you don't. You can choose to take care of problems after they arise, or you can choose to work ahead of yourself a little more. A lot of people only clean when the mess is bad. Cleaning sooner than that will be less intimidating.
There is all the standard answers. The most common one I hear is to play a CD while you work. A twist on this is to collect a couple mp3's that you HATE but is upbeat, burn a disc and set it on repeat. Play it while you work on the condition that the music will stop or change when you are done with a certain task. For example if you hate country music, get some yeehaw toe tappin stuff on like Achy Breaky Heart or Elvira. Of course this is a punishment based strategy but that does motivate people. I would hope that you could make housework more pleasant with your fav music.
You should think about a schedule for your cleaning. The point is not that everything always runs perfectly smooth, but that you have a plan to deal with ordinary tasks. Things still come up but usually not as often when you have a plan. Knowing that you have prevented a crisis situation is often a big motivator. So start making a list of things that need done, when, and how often.
Here is a sample, yours may be different.
Daily:
Sweep kitchen floor, wipe down counters, run dishwasher, wipe out bathroom sinks, make beds, put away toys and other out of place items, gather laundry and do whatever load has accumulated. Make sure to FINISH your laundry each day. When you wash it, dry it, and put it away.
Sunday night: plan the week's meals after looking at what is on hand, and checking the Sunday paper for coupons and sales. This can be soo much looser than you think, just an outline or a main dish for the evening meal, then check that you have enough produce and side dishes to round it out. Maybe you just come up with dinner plans and get the ingredients to make all those meals. If you shop right and store your food properly, it will hold out for that whole week. As the days go by, make the food that sounds good and suits your timeframe that day. Write your grocery list, including lunch items, snacks and drinks, and everything you need for that week's dinners.
Monday is grocery day. Remove old food and wipe down the fridge first before it is full. Can you do other errands while you are out?
Tuesday is paperwork day. Paying bills, making phone calls, balance checkbook, check investments, etc. You might also use this as laundry catchup day, washing sheets etc.
Wednesday is for bathrooms, vacuuming, mopping.
Thursday and Friday are for areas of your house that need regular but not frequent attention, organizing and deep cleaning them in a rotation. Write down all the rooms in your house and come up with a schedule for how you want to work through it. Work for ONE hour per day in a certain room until that room has been deep cleaned, then move to the next room. This is things like rearranging furniture, dusting, flipping mattresses, moving furniture to clean under, washing walls, windows, light fixtures, vacuuming couch cushions, etc. Write a small list of things you want to accomplish in that hour.
Weekends off!
I would also say that having a home for your stuff helps them get back where they belong. If they don't belong somewhere, you will not know what to do with it.
Decluttering will help cleaning go smoother. If you have a lot of stuff, pull it out and go through it. Can you part with stuff? Can you put some things away in deeper storage and pull them out for use another time? Having less out in circulation will mean less in the everyday jumble. Particularly in the clothing department. That is a double whammy...not only do excess clothes clutter our storage spaces, they also make tons and tons more LAUNDRY. So pare down.
In all things, make sure you get your family members in on the plan, even if you are a stay at home mom, or whatever. Promote yourself from laborer to manager of your home. That means that you can organize your family to all do things together, fun and not so fun...teaching them all responsibility and proving their importance in the household.
Here is the good news. Your attitude is everything. Lots of people think cleaning is a torture task, or that they don't deserve to be punished with all the work. BUT you DO deserve to live in a clean home, don't you? YES, so treat yourself well by cleaning up.

I love housework, that is what I do for a living, It is one of my favorite kinds of jobs.. For the people that do hate it, a good cd or radio station turned up kinda loud will help you get your mind off cleaning as your cleaning each room, before you know it, the job is done

The only time I enjoy doing house work is right after good sex. But it has to be during the day. I won't get up in the middle of the night and clean house. If I didn't get the late morning sex, my favorite upbeat CD's help me at least get going.

I do not like doing house work. But I like a clean house. If I could afford to pay some one to do it I would. My most worst thing to do is the dishes. Even with a dish washer. I use plastic plates as often as I can. If the plastic silver ware wasn't so flimsy I would use that also. Who ever invented Styrofoam is my hero.

you know what i love most about house work ? when its all done and its spick 'n' span and you look around and think WOW I DID THAT !
by the way house work burns a lot of calories so you can skip gym today or have tha pudding you've wanted to have ! :)

Meet your mate, for today any how!
I need self cleaning clothes, laminate floor, bathroom and furniture. Do you know where I can buy them?
There was a bloke, who wrote he found housework easier than working. Can you imagine how dirty his house was! Apparently he'd tried both. He should try working and doing housework!

I quite like it as long as there's not a lot of rubbish around. Lovely plants make everything look nice once It's done. You play on the computer when there's nothing else to do. Why not nip off now and get yours done ?
