I am thinking of getting a job in California as a flying instructor. Can anyone recommend areas that would be fun to live in? We have 2 small kids so not looking to go into a big city but would obviously like beaches and some culture, preferably laid back and not stuffy.

You may want to read up on Ventura. The beaches are beautiful and it's in close proximity to the wine country and LA. The weather is gorgeous year-round so the opportunities for recreational activities are endless.

it really depends on how much money you are willing to spend, i live in san diego, and it is a really great place for kids to grow up in. the beaches are here, you also have a special san diegan culture that you'll learn about, you also have to learn about mexico, every high schoolers party place and a great place to visit and go shopping during the day, you also have vegas 5 hours away los angeles 2 hours away and you can also go riding in the desert. there's many outdoor activities you can do as a family. if you like a bit more subtle area you also have riverside which is less densely populated but still a nice place to grow up. being from southern california is a very diverse area so there is not much problems aside from the typical everyday ones.

Think twice. I lived there for 17 years and was so glad to get away! Lived in Sacramento, which is supposed to have the small town atmosphere. Even though I lived in a very nice area...crime was on the rise. I had things stolen off my patio and front porch many times. I can't count the times my cars were broken into and stolen. There are some very nice places with low crime in the US....look for somewhere else to raise your children. Take care & God Bless.

Yes Orange County is the 3rd top best place to live in the nation, it ranks amongst the highest, it is clean, sunny gorgeous, near the beaches, the weather is beautiful, I am going to move there some time soon, when I sell my home.

Be prepared to pay top dollar for a property near the beach, or close enough.

Search for Orange county on the web.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. Its expensive to live near the beaches but hell to get out of traffic to more you live inland. Im from Orange County and there is so much going on there, i love it.

Basicall pick Southern Cali and I hear the Riverside County is good which is inland besides Orange County and LA County.

Hey! I schooled in Orange County Cypress college before joining CSU and i believe its the best place to live in, this could be my choice in regard to your job nature, LA international is about 30 miles and Wayne Airport is just a few miles. And Anaheim is a great city to live in too.

Then Santa Monica. Los Angeles is very near but you are in a pretty area with the beach, entertainements, shopping and all the rest.
Good luck.
