I'm thinking it might have to do with getting stuck when cleaning or stuffing chicken or turkey.
A better explanation would be that it would allow them to be fashionably late

Oh, sometimes there's no need to wear one because in the kitchen, there's the wall clock or a cellphone on hand.

Because she can look at her cell phone for the time. In fact, watches are not common anymore because almost everyone, men & women, have cell phones these days.

Nobody HAS to wear a watch.
I do almost as much cooking as my wife does, however, and I never take off my watch when I'm cooking, if that's your answer.
