Use a tuning fork then if you can't hear yourself if the guitar is tuned correctly.

The amplifier is not what causes distortion like that, you have all sorts of paddles and the like for that.

Standard tuning is (from the thickest string down) EADGBE
Heavy Metal tuning is mostly in Drop-D DADGBE

You need a guitar pedal to get distortion out of an amp that doesn't have it in the amp itself. The closest you can get is if you have 2 volumes crank up the input and Tone. The output volume will control it if you need to play Heavy at night time... shhhhh!

When I play, I have a cheap electric keyboard next to me to tune to.
Distortion can come from the amp- turn up the pre-amp or the drive. Or you can get pedals to distort the guitar.

For standard tuning, every 5th fret should sound like the next string up, with the exception of the "B" string (which sounds like the 4th fret on the "G" string). Different songs require different tunings (such as "Sad but True" by Metallica requires all strings to be tuned down by two frets), but most songs can effectively be played on standard tuning.

To get a more heavy-metal sound, increase the distortion and modify the waveform on your amplifier. Also consider the purchase of a wah-wah pedal.
