You need to decide this for yourself. You don't want to ruin your appraisal by taking advice from someone on YA.

appraisals and staff development is crucial to the running of a business as top management are supposed to listen to what you have to say and determine how their business can be improved or at least run better in the short term. You can be honest but you have to weigh it off against the amount of time you are going to remain there. If you think your manager or whoever is going to do your appraisal will benefit from the truth, then tell him. If he is a good manager he probably knows already, if not from you then from other staff members. You can actually be positive about the bad things by suggesting changes or possible improvements and let your manager know that you are being pro-active in your approach to your appraisal, which is often only used as a forum to moan about wages and the company in general. If you think it won't make any difference and you are wasting your time, leave it to the longer term employed within the company and wait to take up your other position. However, as others have suggested here, it is ultimately up to you. Good luck.

Well, appraisals are for looking into how you are doing in your job from all prespectives. As you say you are only doing this job until you become a policeman so why is it such a big deal? I think it is useful to let your manager know how you feel - look at ways that perhaps some things could be changed or accommodated to make your life easier. Lying is pointless and a bad way to start your career particularly if you want to be a cop!!!

Well, if you admit all those things you are telling your boss that your judgement is rubbish, because you choose to stay in a job that you hate.

I assume you knew the distance and pay when you started. Again, thats poor judgement to take the job.

Not very good really, eh ?

What would be the purpose, whats your motivation. Just to rant ? Not good or constructive

I wouldn't burn too many bridges, it suprising how small the world is.

If you told me your hate your job/pay/commute I'd ask you to start looking elsewhere for work. And you'd be very unlikely to get any consideration in the meantime, i'd focus on the more positive staff.

I would have said yes, tell all, life is too short, but what's the chances of you getting an equally convenient job in the interim before starting as a policeman?

It might be best just to go with the flow for now and see the positives of the job - it's a job at least.....

I think you and the person doing the appraisal should be completely honest! How will probs ever get sorted if your not? Lets face it, youve gotta work and while your there, things might as well be easy for you! Appraisals are great for getting things out in the open!! Its your chance to say whats on your mind to do with work!!

Be honest to a point.

My supervisors know that if the job was closer to where I live I would be really happy - I spend the best part of 3 hours a day travelling back and forwards.

you should be happy with what you do in your life, since you only live once, if this job does nothing but to past time till your police officer job then find one you will enjoy, don't quit until you find, it but if its a prerequisite for your law enforcement, then some times you gotta do what you gotta do, and smile at work and take the stress out on something productively like the gym, jogging or tennis.

You need to be honest but you also need to phrase things in a professional way. Instead of saying "my jobs sucks and I hate you" instead phrase it as "I'm not getting job satisfaction in these areas a, b and c" and then suggest ways you think your job could be improved.

Your managers don't want you to be unhappy in your job because you'll be less productive so appraisals are a 2-way system to help both parties.

be open and honest i think your manager will appreciate the fact you have told them the truth, if you lie and say everything is happy nothing will change. I speak from experience now i make sure appraisals and one to ones are open and honest speaking the truth often works. you may even get a pay rise :D

Be realistic. Everyone feels the same, but work is what you need to live so don't blow it by being "honest". You want a pay rise, find out what you can do to get one, hate your job, find out what you want to do and get a job doing that. It's all about choices, stay ion the rut, or don't.
