It depends on the hormone. If you think of adrenaline, that is in direct response to stimuli to your "fight or flight" receptors. Others, such as Oestrogen are secreted due to the body responding to internal stimuli.

All hormones have their own triggers, so without specifying a hormone it is difficult to say.
