There may be places in your city where you can go to take classes. Search the Yellow Pages.
Other than that, I HIGHLY recommend that you BUY BOOKS. I don't know what the hell it is, but since 1990, people have been allergic to buying books; I mean, for any computer topic, like the operating system manual, programming, PC hardware, etc.
I feel that unless a person is very good with computers and software on the PC, then they should have at least 2 books: One on the operating system, and one on computer hardware.
For an example of a problem which could have been handled with a book, you just need to look at many of the Questions here. A lot of XP problems here could have been solved beforehand by using the System Restore program. If those people with software/hardware problems had a book on XP, then they would have known about System Restore and how to use it. Instead, Answerers have to continually tell people to try using that program to solve a hardware/software problem.

If you know how to use a computer online then what more do you need to learn about using a computer?
If you mean extensive knowlege like programming or networking, I would say it is more difficult as it is a form of distance learning & those are proven to need more attention than attending a class.

trial and error is a great teacher! There are good advice forums online but I think it helps if you do some sort of formal course at a local college?
If you can't manage that, just sit in front of it and have fun, if you have problems, just ask here and some kind soul on Answers will probably help!

Playing with it/using it - best way really. But it'll take time - so don't run before you can walk.
