England & Wales have eight annual public holidays. This is how you can calculate when they will be.
1. New Year's Day - this is 1st January, provided that it is a weekday. If 1st January falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, then it is the following Monday (3rd or 2nd, respectively).
2. Good Friday - this is the Friday before Easter Sunday, and can be a date between 19th March and 21st April . [Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the Spring Equinox. The Spring Equinox is often on 21st March. Let's imagine that there was a full moon the day before the Spring Equinox, so we have to consider the next full moon, 27 days later. If that is a Monday, then Easter Sunday will be the following Sunday (an additional 6 days), and so Easter Sunday will be 21st March + 27 days + 6 days = 23rd April, making Good Friday 21st April at the latest. Let's now imagine an alternative scenario, where the Spring Equinox is both a full moon and a Saturday, this makes Easter Sunday the following day: 22nd March, and so Good Friday is 20th March. As a further complication, the Spring Equinox can occur on 20th March, instead of 21st, and so the earliest possible Good Friday is actually 19th March. There are plenty of websites that can tell you when Easter is from year to year]
3. Easter Monday - this is the Monday after Easter Sunday, and so can be on a date from 22 March to 24th April.
4. May Day - this is the first Monday in May (so from 1st to 7th May).
5. Spring Bank Holiday - this is the last Monday in May (so from 25th to 31st May).
6. August Bank Holiday - this is the last Monday in August (so from 25th to 31st August).
7. Christmas Day - this is 25th December, provided that it is a weekday. If 25th December falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, then it is the following Monday (27th or 26th, respectively).
8. Boxing Day - this is 26th December, provided that it is a weekday. If 26th December falls on a Saturday, then it is the following Monday (28th). If 26th December falls on a Sunday, then it is the following Tuesday, also 28th, [Monday 27th having been given in lieu of Christmas Day].
It sounds more complicated than it actually is!
