Kasparov is usually recognised as the best, but I would have put money on a top form Bobby Fisher beating him.

Kasparov seems to be have declared himself the best player ever. I think it's a safe bet that Fischer disagrees with him.
Everyone's got their own opinion about the best ever or best in the 20th century. Fiscer and Kasparov are at the top of most lists, but there are other contenders, including Capablanca, Alekhine, and Karpov.

Link below list the top 10 chessplayers ever. Yes, if you pick anyone from the top 7 from it, I would not disagree.
But then for me personally, I would pick Michail Botvinnik (1911~1995). Why? For some reasons: (1) He was the only one who succeded in recovering championships; (2) He defeated Capablanca in a simultaneous exhibition when he was just 14 years old; (3) The famous three Ks (Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, and Vladimir Kramnik) studied under Botvinnik, where these three became World Chess Champion!!!

i would say garry kasprov but if not in the 20th century there was one player who was so good he quit chess becuase no one was good enough for him... sorry that i dont remmber his ame... =S
