There are two types of HDDs.

IDE
SCSI

IDEs are used in most of standard PCs
SCSI (small comuter system interface) are
used in such PCs /computers, which require
a faster througput and faster output.
To install such HDDs, which are quite
expansive, one requires a SCSI driver card
in such systems. These SCSI cards are
also expansive. Adaptec, Future Domain
etc. are manufacturers of such cards.

Normally such cards are as fast as the
processor/ or matches with the speed
of the processor, whereas, the IDE drives
are much slower than the processors speed
used in any system.
