Humans can eat animal food. We are just not accustomed to the taste and smell. And the nutrition value may exceed or not meet that of the humans. Otherwise we can consume them. Ofcourse one must consider that since they are for the animal the criteria for safety and health is different. The food may contain certain microscopic lifeform that may not be harmful to an animal for the difference in their immunity, composition of their digestive juices, etc.
They can be consumed specially on hard times like World War where you can't be picky.

who decides what is a human or non-human food if not humans themselves.
you could equally ask is it harmful for dogs to eat cat food or vice versa or especially is it harmful if they eat human food.
i know a dog who always wants to try everything she sees I or some other creature eats - including fruits, grass and young twigs.
personally i find cat food more tasty and better quality than dogs'.

Years ago I used to work for a biscuit manufacturer, when we made dog biscuits it was all the leftover biscuits crushed up with meat flavouring in it, so I guess they are safe to eat

read one article before, is not advisable to eat animals food.
cos human body system is different from animals. Japanese pop singer Ayumi eats her cat's food, no wonder her voice sounds like a kitten.........

My little brother used to eat Purina Dog Chow, like it was candy..the pediatrician told my mom that it was OK..but, after reading the labels on most pet foods, I wouldn't want to eat them.. I've been known to chew bird seed, though..or oat hay stems..

It can be extremely harmful,
specially if your dog catches you at it.
On a serious note, its not harmful - some consider it just tasteless
