Practice, practice and more practice. Challenge yourself, play with musicians better than you. Play with other musicians helps develop timing and you get a better understanding of phrasing, dynamics, and you might cop a few licks as well.

Here are a few women who are established musicians and guitarists.

Liona Boyd - classical guitar
Lita Ford, Joan Jett, Chrissie Hynde - rockers
Suzi Quatro - Bass

There's a tribute band called the Iron Maidens, their guitarists can probably out duel Maiden's own.

Guitarists should have incredibly strong hands. So I would say, practice until your hands are extremely strong.

To be better at anything you must have the desire and learn as much as you can from all sorces, then take what you learn and apply it. Having knowledge is one thing, doing something with that knowledge is all up to you and your desire. I don't think gender has anything to do with it.

i agree that you will need strong hands but you will also need longish nails on your right hand and less so on you left to ensure that you can get the very end of your finger on the strings. sounds like a crappy tip but that's what a friend of mine told me and it made me more accurate. x
