The things which we often carry with us is preferred to be dark in color like men carry black wallet, women carry black purses, etc.
The black color is a standard color.
This is not the only reason but now a days there are many different colored laptops.
In homes or offices if you keep the color of desktops black then few people think that black colored things should be avoided in homes just because of their belief.

Could be because laptops are to carry in places and can get dirty quickly. however desktop is at home and your maid can even dust it once a day

Not necessarily.... many laptops are white like the macs/ apple... whereas many desktops are black like ibm/ dell/ compaq... so ur question is like 5 years old... now the trend is reversing...

Coz laptops are carried to many places n possible to have dust in it.
Dusty particles are normally black in colour. so it ll mingle with your laptop colour.
desktop are ment to be in your clean home. so .......
