Well, you have said nothing of his interests, or his personality, so how could we. But I will go so far as to make a good suggestion, nonetheless. No plugs here, but most bookstores these days have "gift cards," that function like debit cards for the amount you put in them when you purchase them. So if you don't know too much about his tastes, go with him to a bookstore and ask him what he's interested in, and then present him with the card. I mean, purchase the card ahead of time, sign and put in envelope, and then when he starts telling you what he'd buy "if he had the money," hand him the card.
One of the hazards in buying books as gifts is if you are buying for a book-lover, he may just buy the thing you got between the time you buy it and the date in question; in this case, his birthday. And if you are buying for someone who is not a book lover, per se, you and better know his interests, because he probably does not buy any books except those in his field of interest (I'm assuming he at least reads; otherwise why would you be buying a book for him?), and if you choose for him, you may fail. So a gift card really is a good choice.
Problem is, you invariably end up putting more on such a card than you would in buying a single book, because you "round up" in deciding how much to put on the card. Still, if you love the guy, it's probably worth it.

ALYC... That is a pretty bold, and sexist comment! How about you take a better look at the responses from questions asked in this section of Yahoo Answers.
Now to answer the question... Adventure, treasure hunting, sci-fi, fantasy, fictional, or something more along the line of documentary, political, there are also philosophical, sports, current events, and classics, (which can derive from any one of those choices). It all depends on what he is interested in.
If he likes sports, get him a book of stats on his favourite sport, or greatest moments.
Military, something like Tom Clansey, or James Rollins.
Fantasy, something from Tolkien, Rowlings, or Pratchett.
It is so hard for one to give just one book, or author, and say enjoy. So I will list some of my favourites, (excluding authors, and book ideas already given so far in my list)...
The Ingenuity Gap by Thomas Homer Dixon
I have read a few of Neal Stephenson's books. He seems to be a solid writer, who is consistent in good books. Snow Crash, The Cryptonomicron, and the Quiksilver series...
The same with Neil Gaiman. American Gods, Neverwhere, Smoke And Mirrors...
Dan Brown is pretty good. Angels And Demons, The Da Vinci Code...
I can't say definitely to get this or that, because I like so many different book, but also, you didn't stipulate any of his interests. I do hope I have helped though.

The Chatham School Affair by Thomas H Cook.
The library classified it as crime fiction, which could only refer to the forbidden love between Mr Leland Reed and Miss Elizabeth Channing, two teachers at Chatham School. But I disagree. Love is never forbidden. Also, the narrator Henry, a pupil of Chatham School, loved Sarah Doyle, and the author gave hints that she loved him back. It made me feel a scathing anger towards life and its whole web of duties and obligations, since both the relationships of Mr Reed and Miss Channing resulted in the death of Sarah Doyle and thus indirectly ruining Henry's own future with Sarah.
LOVE CAN EXIST IN ALL CONDITIONS AND HAS NO LIMITS OR BOUNDARIES. GO AND LOVE!

You don't say what his interests are, but I would recommend something with action.
I've been reading the Steven Coonts action-adventure series lately and have thoroughly enjoyed them. His first was "Flight of the Intruder." Most recent is "The Traitor."

maybe fiction or non-fiction types or autobiography...
wait autobiography are kinda lame unless to those that are interested for inspiration and stuff..
