It's not for gifts. In my family, whenever we buy a book or comic, we make a point of wrapping it in plastic. I'm not very good at it and wonder if anyone can tell me how they do it. Thanks!

For years I have been using the Highsmith jacket covers that are used by libraries and used/rare book dealers. They are simple to apply, protect the dust jacket and keep the books looking like new. They enhance the appearance of my collectible used books, including pleasure reading and rare books, and prevent any damage to fragile, ageing jackets.

The covers are clear polyester; they are acid-free; they come in several sizes, or you can order a pre-cut popular pack with four different sizes. A white paper liner is bonded to one edge; the other one is open. You simply insert the book jacket inside, crease the open edge of the cover over the jacket, secure w/ tape if you like, replace the jacket on the book, and--voila!--your book is covered. You may purchase in packages of 25 or 100, and the cost will run from around 15 cents to 40 cents each, depending on the size and weight (sturdiness) of the cover you choose. They also have such cover material in rolls with dispensers.

This is only one of many products they have for covering books, including other types for paperbacks, magazines, comics, and the like. They will send you a catalog, or you may speak with someone who will advise you by calling 1.800.558.2110. The website is

There may be other, competing companies that supply the same materials (Brodart, for example), but I have been using these covers from Highsmith for some twenty years, and I have always found them to be prompt, courteous, helpful, and reasonable. And they send me a new catalog every year.

Plastic Wrap For Books

Are you talking about making a plastic book cover for your book? Very simple, very easy. If you have a paper cover on it, as you usually do on a new hardbound, just cut a piece of the right sort of plastic (available in stationary stores) a bit larger than the book cover all around, and fold it the long way over the cover. (Sorry we can't do diagrams here.) Then put the cover, now covered in plastic, back on the book. Now hold the book down so that you have the spine on the table and the cover will lie flat on the table if you open it. Open first one cover and then the other this way, putting the edge of the book cover in the fold of the plastic covered paper cover, and tape the remaining plastic flap to the inside of the book. Since the plastic is larger than the paper cover all the way around, this will not damage the paper cover. Be sure about the fold tight onto the edge of the book, though, or the book won't close properly once the cover is taped.

For a book that doesn't already have a cover, first use a piece of brown paper (even cut from a grocery bag) first, and put the title and author on the front and the spine before you cover that cover in plastic, as above.
