Darth Vader is indeed a character from the original trilogy of Star Wars films. In those films he was a villain, the right hand of the evil Emperor, who carried out his Master's bidding to subdue those in opposition to the Empire. In The Empire Strikes Back, Vader revealed that he in fact the father of Luke Skywalker, the hero of the Star Wars films. Luke had hated Vader because Luke's mentor had told him that it had been Vader who had "betrayed and murdered" Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker. It turned out that Vader had once been the noble warrior Anakin Skywalker before being seduced by the Emperor to be a practitioner of evil, the story of which was brought to life in the prequel trilogy of Star Wars films.
