Firstly, function wise are the same but the advantage are HUGE. You can move about with a laptop eg from campus to campus. Tips : don't get laptops that are weight more than 2kg if any bcause this will cause you shoulder ache. You also can go online if you'r near the hotspots (check if chargable) and do your assignment or work on the move. Is also an entertainment on the move (games, movie etc). You don't need to do dusting like crazy if it is kept in the bag. And there are less cabling or in fact, no cable if you prefer.
Secondly, the disadvantage will be short battery life as compare to normal desktops. Look for long battery life when shopping for one. Also, the display may be small and more delicate to take care. Above all, the price is much more than the desktops. so, when shop look for a trustworhty brand with good review and reputation.
MY Opinion: Laptop is like my "walking" working desktop that gives me convenience.

I prefer desktops, but that doesnt mean I dont like laptops. Laptops are portable, but I mean where else do you use your computer but at home really. They are great when you are a student but besides that I dont really need a computer with me all the time. They don't take up any room at all as well.
A desktop is the best because overall it lasts longer than a laptop and its upgradeable. Laptops are more expensive to upgrade and usually dont last as long as a desktop would.

The basic reason laptops are better than computer ia that laptops are "PORTAL" and due to more portability than desktop,one can take to personal trips to keep in touch with individuals rather than to be out of the loop without a computer.

Um, laptops are computers.
The advantage to a laptop computer over a desktop computer is the portability - you can take it with you and (power permitting) use it anywhere.
There are some major disadvantages - you're generally more limited in computing power, ease of upgrading components (if they can be upgraded), not to mention the keyboard, mouse, and video on the laptop. Yes, you can connect an external keyboard, mouse, and/or video screen, but that defeats the purpose of the portability.

They are not necessarily better than computers (as u can upgrade your pc's motherboard but u cannot do the same with laptops) but for convenience, laptops are useful. Laptops have the advantage of being used in presentations and being compact enough to information and data around.

Laptops are computers too. I think you are comparing laptops with desktops. Laptops are easy to carry around. Now, laptops come with many different gadgets attached to them so that they are as functional as Desktops. The prices are coming down too.
The only issue is you could lose or damage the laptop easily.

ummm... actually laptops are computers.. i think what u meant was is laptop better than desktops.. the only difference between them is laptops u can carry around while desktops obviously are on desks, tables... etc.. the memory can be the same.. it depends of course on the price and brand..

laptops are better than desktop because,
1. more portable than a desktop
2. easier for a student to be able to carry a computer with him in class to take notes than to jot them down on paper and try to make sense of it later

You can not compare LapTop with DeskTop.
Both are equally efficient and useful.
They differ in the purposes, they do serve.
LapTop is meant for professionals, executives, corporates etc. who need ready recknoers (information) while they are on move too besides in meetings, presentations etc..
DeskTop is generally a desk to prepare information for the leaders!

u should have meant why laptops are better than desktops. anyway i understood it.
it's better becuase of convenience. u cannot take your desktop with you while travelling but u can take laptop withyout that's why it's called at laptop, even while travelling you can keep it on your lap and use it, u dont need desk for the same.
