when i was younger I would practice thinking of nothing at all. it's pretty tough, but the point is you're so busy thinking of nothing at all that you aren't really thinking of anything important. stare at a white patch of wall if it helps.

Anytime that my heart rate is up and my breathing is synchronized with my pulse, I am way "out there." I run five times a week, at least, and I also sing, write, and dance. These are things that I do alone (except for maybe singing and dancing) and they all put me in a place which is pure and very real. There are other things which can be done with another person but you'll have to use your imagination there. ;-) Meditation can happen through so many different activities which most people don't even realize. These are all gifts! Have an exceptionally wonderful day and weekend, Oliver! :-)

I've had to deal with a lot of bureaucracy lately and sitting around in stuffy offices with no air flow being alternately ignored or stared at by staff is not a pleasant place to be.

I found two things really helped. Sit straight but in a comfortable position and pick a spot about 3m in front of you and let your eyes unfocus, then start paying attention to your breathing. In this position people don't really pay attention to you because you just look as if you are waiting patiently. You can do this standing in a queue too just pick a spot on the person infronts jumper. If you zone out too far then the people behind will be sure to let you know!

From there you can either try to think of nothing, always a favourite and pretty hard to do, or you pick one word or place to think about. If it's a stressful situation then choose somewhere that gives you a sense of calm.

Alternately, although not strictly meditation but a great wind down for me, let your mind wander to the silly. Don't allow yourself to think of anything important. Just start thinking about something daft like pink elephants or and just let your imagination go. Also a great way of getting to sleep when you've too much on your mind.

I drove a truck for many years. I was one of the first women out there as a solo driver and it was a stressful job without the pressures of being hounded by male drivers and those that were jelous because I had a very well paying job.
This is the system I used most often and was able to modify it so that I could drive and meditate at the same time. I would suggest that you start out by making a space and time for yourself where you will have quiet and will not be interupted.
First you start at your feet. After making yourself comfortable you concentrate on feeling the existance of your feet. As you do this you will notice that after just a second or two your feet will have almost involuntarily relax. (You may want to do this the first time or two in a warm bath.) Once you notice this effect will them to relax even further. Imagine them supported on a bed of feathers or if you like flowers, flower petals. Imagine the feel of these soft and natural objects caressing your skin. Then continue on to your ankles, your calfs, your knees. It sounds a bit to simple but it is amazing how well such an easy thing can refresh. After you have become adept at this you will not have any trouble relaxing your entire body in just moments. You will also learn that you are able to relax yourself and work on anylizing life issues once you are in that state of total repose. I often use this technique when I want to have a long conversation with God.
Best of everything to you.

wow, u have loads of interesting answers here!
heres me try!
counting your breath! I do it quite a lot, as i find its a very good precursor to almost any other type of meditation. I do this blank mind thing too, sitting looking at walls, and i do highly recommend it, its very good, but i know myself that i couldnt do it so well if i hadnt disciplined my mind a bit, and i do that by counting my breaths, and there are many ways to do it, and it can be done almost anywhere...
I count breaths like this, 1, 2 then 1, 2, 3, then 1, 2, 3, 4 and do that till u get to 10... its very hard at first, but after doing it a few times a day for a few days, it feels very nice!
good luck!
and enjoy!
oh, one more thing, sometimes i close my eyes and imagine myself smiling a half smile, and then i seem to always smile too! dont make your self smile, just imagine it!

here are my 2 simple meditation techniques that i practice everyday:

whenever i take a shower, i intensify my senses by being aware of the touch of jets of water on my skin. i picture in my mind's eye that the water not only cleanses my body of dirt and impurities but it also takes away my negative emotions and stress. the sound of the drops of water on the floor lulls me into a peaceful state while i look at the window with a magnificent view of the blue bay below. thereafter, i emerge from the shower clean & fresh both in body and spirit.

while i'm on the street either driving my car or just walking, i imagine that my eyes emit a ray of light which illuminates anything i focus on. this way, i become more aware of my surroundings as if i'm looking at the world with new pair of eyes. this simple meditative exercise energizes and gives me a peaceful feeling always.

i hope my suggestions help you in any good way. cheers!

Shut your eyes and focus all of your energy and concentration on the centre of your forehead, see a tiny point of golden light beaming from this point. This light is your soul. Watch this beam of light as it travels upwards into the sky and beyond until it connects to its source, a much larger point of golden light. Once connected, feel golden light flowing into you through your forehead. This light recharges your soul, feeding you with positive energy.

This is an ancient 'yoga' technique, it can be done any where and can last as long as you want it to. I would aim for about 10min each time, but this depends on your concentration. It can be very hard at the beginning, our minds are not used to focusing in this way. But with practice it becomes much easier, and the benefits are huge. Try it as early as you can in the morning, and then during the day whenever your energy and spirit become drained.

Buddhits say you need a leader to mediate so that you can be guided into the levels of meditation.
During meditation, Hindus chant mantras - verbal praise to God which energizes you. The mantras praise all kinds of Gods in millions of ways and as you chant them, you get all the energy - it takes you away from the real world so it is quite stimulating.

Personally I think meditation is simply mental exercise same as jogging is a physical exercise - yes I tend to oversimplify things.

Preparation :
Sit comfortably, dress comfortably, choose a place with ambient temperature, calm place, not hungry not too full state, freshen up with shower or just wash up ...

Meditation
Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. It is the only meaningful activity during a relaxing meditation. Do not sleep.

You can imagine that you are a small ball of energy in your abdomen that is moving up and down as you breathe. The idea is to focus on something internal as your brain relaxes - no interaction with the outside world. Some ask you to try to look into the ceiling of your brain. Experiment and choose what you feel is good for you.

After Meditation
Spare some spare time after meditation to let the brain digest whatever it was doing during meditation.

Practice for a couple of weeks atleast once a day - 5 - 10 minutes are enough per session.

I think meditation allows your brain to restructure its thought process, allowing you to think more clearly, strengthens your memory, and enhances your wellbeing.
After 2 weeks please inform me if you get glimpses / flash backs of your childhood or lost memories that just come to you out of nothing. vinod@dynamic-thai.com

I say to you this because it happened to me.

Try sitting still with your back straight, and concentrate on how you breathe. You can close your eyes if you want, but it's not essential. The straight back is just to allow your lungs to get as full as possible... The longer you sit still, the better the effect afterwards in my experience. 'Whatever you think about, remember to keep returning to the breath, and the sensation of breathing'.

Of course, you won't want to try this when you're driving, but if you have a free minute, it can't hurt.

Hi!
I recommend insence as it is condusive to a medadtive atmosphere. Alternatively, add a drop of lavender oil and sandlewood oil to a hankerchief in order to relax the mind while you're on the move.
However, I strongly recommend a clear quartz crystal. Keep it in your pocket, wherever you go. When you need to enter a state of calm, hold it in your palm and begin focusing on it. You will soon feel at peace due to the crystal alterting your body's magnetic field.
Hope this helps and happy meditating!
