Plain and pure ignorance. I was never a huge Steve Irwin fan, and I was also appalled when he had his baby with him while teasing the crocodile. However, he would not be happy that people are trying to avenge his death by harming and killing the type of animal which killed him. He always knew he was in "their" territory and I feel sure that he realized he could very likely die one day doing the work he did. I wonder if he had worn something like a bullet-proof vest, would he have survived this instance? Anyways, hindsight is always too late. I also think he got too cocky and was becoming more of a showman than a conservationist, as time went on.

Because just like the Americans these people are insane, idiots. Remember Jaws, the movie, well this sparked off the biggest ever shark hunt through America and that was just a movie!!
The irony is, Steve Irwin in his ridiculous approach to animals was actually a huge naturalist. He found a formula that actually made the thick Aussies and Americans sit up and look at the world of so called vicious animals and say, "well actually, you really have to annoy these creatures, before they bite!". All the good he did (in his round about way) has just been completely undone. I think his wife needs to speak up and say, "actually, my fellow Aussies, Steve's death was a freak death of gigantic proportions, stop this killing, NOW!".

Despite the post-mortem heartless critiscm of German Grier and the like, Steve Irwin brought the issue of conservation into more homes than ever before. I think he was a hero for the animals he cared about and concervation in general. At his zoo he made sure that children could touch the annimals, quote "every kid that touches one of these becomes an instant conservationist". Good on him.
Of course this does not explain the knee jerk reaction of people killing Mantas. That is a mixture of ignorance, grief and loyalty

I'm certain it is only a minority of Aussies who are doing this. They are misguided for certain.
Steve would not have wanted this.
I agree he was foolish to dangle the kid. That did bother me greatly.
I suspect it was his escape from so many close calls that made him think he had a special guardian angel protecting him and he got foolish.
It is sad that he is gone, he did a lot to teach people about animals and there is an article in the paper telling us he invested a lot of time and money in the zoo. So, like him or not, Steve did a lot of good in his short life for the sake of animals.

Kangaroos are quite attractive animals and it is indeed sad that they are shot to keep down the numbers. Unfortunately there are not many options that we can employ otherwise. Condoms have been used, but with their small arms it is difficult for the dears to pop one on when they need one. They have also received instruction in the rhythm method, but with all that hopping around it is difficult to keep a track of dates. I know that there are many people in government and non-government organisations that would love for you to find an alternative. However, its a cold hard fact that kangaroos and aboriginals are present in far greater numbers than before white settlement. We are indeed fortunate that at least the kangaroos can be legally culled.

I think the aussies should think about what Steve would have thought. He would of gone insane if he knew this would happen! He was promoting the conservation of these rays not the killing of them.
Come on Aussies, if you truly loved Steve you would not be killing these animals!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree - you're correct. I ddidn't like Steve Irwin and his stupid antics and then talking over everyone and drowning them out when they criticized him for the stujpid jerk act of endangering his child.
The people should spend at least 3 months in jail for killing the animals and another 3 months for liking Steve Irwin.
Vengeance for what?? Irwin was in the wrong for invading their space and poking at them.

because this is human nature: we gotta have our revenge. which we all know is not what steve would have wanted but i don't think that's very clear to the neanderthals out there.
'huh huh, steve got killed by a fish, let's go shoot all the fish in the sea, huh huh'
