I was reading Time this week and there was a discussion of War Games that the senior policy makers in the military and politics play. I was wondering if there was anything similar online. I'm looking for current events, particularly a war with Iran. I'm not looking for shoot-em-up so much as strategy. Thanks.

There are a couple of games that I know the US Military uses:

First and most obvious is that the Army actually produces a free online game "Americas Army" as a recruitment tool. The game also includes a basic training component, which helps teach the basic values and philosophy of the Army. It is a first person shooter. There is also a sequel, "America's Army Special Forces"

"Full Spectrum Warrior" is a commercial spin-off of an actual training squad based game written for the U.S. Army. The publisher made a version for the Army, then modified it a little and sold it publicly. It is a squad-based game that is very tactical (not necessarily strategic).

The U.S. Army ordered 1,000 copies of the Steel Beast tank simulator game (2002) for its training at West Point.

If you are looking for fun (not realistic game play) here are some recommendations:

1. Battlefield 2. It is a first person shooter with an arcade feel, but it combines jets, tanks, and ground troops in online battle pretty well. Many of the battles are set in the Middle East.

2. Command and Conquer Generals. It is a fun real time strategy game (time passes in real time). It is not realistic--it is almost comicbookish, but it is entertaining. There are other real time strategy games that may be newer and better, but they aren't set in the Middle East--so they don't fit with your interest in Iran.

3. Civilization IV is the best turn based game out there (time stops between each of your moves). It is very strategic and complex. The military part is not really the center focus of the game. Watch the Greeks, they always backstab me.

4. World of Warcraft. It might be the best game overall out there right now. It has nothing to do with the real world and is pretty much addictive. I haven't even tried playing because I don't want my wife to divorce me.
