GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), mean solar time at the meridian from which time in other zones is calculated. it is given by 0 and falls on the on Britain.

IST(Indian Standard Time) is the time at 82' 30 N, which is taken as the standard time for the whole country to avoid confusion in flight timings etc.

the difference between these two is roughly of 2 hrs ie: Indians are 2 hrs ahead of the Britons.

Arises due to rotation of Earth. East faces the Sun first. We in India(IST)are 5-1/2 hours ahead fof GMT. To use day light hours effectively at times it could be 4-1/2 hours ahead also.

IST=indian standard time :Indian Standard Time (IST) is the time observed throughout India, with a time offset of . India does not observe daylight saving time (DST) or other seasonal adjustments, although DST was used briefly during the Sino–Indian War of 1962, and the Indo–Pakistani Wars of 1965 and 1971. In certain time-zone maps, IST is designated as E*.

Indian Standard Time is calculated on the basis of 82.5 °E longitude which just west of the town of Mirzapur, near Allahabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The latitude difference between Mirzapur and the Royal Observatory, Greenwich in the UK translates to an exact time difference of 5 hours and 30 minutes. Local time is calculated from a clock tower at the Allahabad Observatory though the official time servers are located in New Delhi.

GMT=greenwich mean time :the local time at the 0 meridian passing through Greenwich, England; it is the same everywhere
"Greenwich Mean Time" (GMT) is a term originally referring to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich in England. It is now often used to refer to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) when this is viewed as a time zone, although strictly UTC is an atomic time scale which only approximates GMT in the old sense. It is also used to refer to Universal Time (UT), which is the astronomical concept that directly replaced the original GMT.

Noon Greenwich Mean Time is not necessarily the moment when the Sun crosses the Greenwich meridian (and reaches its highest point in the sky in Greenwich) because of Earth's uneven speed in its elliptic orbit and its axial tilt. This event may be up to 16 minutes away from noon GMT (this discrepancy is known as the equation of time). The fictitious mean sun is the annual average of this nonuniform motion of the true Sun, necessitating the inclusion of mean in Greenwich Mean Time.

Historically the term "GMT" has been used with two different conventions for numbering hours. The old astronomical convention (before 1925) was to refer to noon as zero hours, whereas the civil and more modern convention is to refer to midnight as zero hours. The more specific terms "UT" and "UTC" do not suffer this ambiguity, always referring to midnight as zero hours.
