While most people now use the term to mean a 2nd full moon in a single calendar month, the term used to mean an "extra" full moon during a calendar *season* (Winter, Spring, etc.) (Four, instead of three).
The simpler definition now in use grew from an error in intepreting "Blue Moon" in old almanacs!
Certain kinds of smoke could make the moon look blue, but otherwise there aren't "literal" Blue Moons.

people say, or give dates within the lunar cycle, but i am of the opinion that a blue moon is given over to a saying ,like hes a bit blue , hes sad or despondant ect , artistic refrences not with standing ,loads of artists take this literally, within the context of thier work, there are singers /songwriters who have penned lyrics refering to 'blue moon' a song about being alone, ect and used as a mataphor to describe a feeling of sadness. regards LF
