Go to a computer store and buy a sound card. Open the case and plug it in. It will probably have some software drivers (on a CD) that come with it, but if your computer is XP, it probably already knows about the sound card and can automatically install it.

It's also possible that you have a sound card and that the device is disabled. Go to Start->Control Panel->System and click on the Hardware tab. Then click on the device manager button. Look under Sound, video and game controllers and see if you have something that looks like an audio controller. Double click on it and see if the Device Status indicates it's working properly.
Good luck.

Just shop around computer stores for a, 'PCI sound card.' The prices vary. I don't recommend a sound card made by Creative Technologies, like the Sound Blaster Live! or especially the Audigy models.
There's too many problems with them.
I think Turtle Beach sound cards are good.
