(1) it is a lot softer than a baseball
(2) it goes much slower than a baseball, which makes it "soft" when it hits

a softball is not soft, sure, its lighter than a baseball, but it still hurts like heck when u get hit with it. people just call it softball cuz they think that girls are wimps and that softball is super easy. but it is harder than baseball, the game is alot faster, and people who think baseball is harder will change their mind if they try to play softball with a good team. ive played both softball and baseball for 9 years and softball is harder to play. but yeah, a softball is hard.

Its softer than a baseball and lighter. If it was too soft it would get destroyed way to easy when you hit it with a bat. then you would have to buy a lot of softballs :) Hope this helps

it was initially when the game was first founded. here's a link where u can read up on it if u'd like. it's pretty interesting. it was initially thought up to be played inside w/boxing gloves {that's where the "soft" comes in!!!
