If you are running a microsoft operating system such as win98 or Xp try downloading and installing a version of Linux or possibly BSD. These operating systems are free to download but have a high learning curve which might take a while to set your computer up. They have the advantage of generally being quicker than anything Microsoft has to offer and are more secure. And do I have to stress they are FREE.
If you are experiencing sluggish Internet usage and do not wish to change your operating system go to Opera.com and download a free copy of their browser for Windows. It will take a little time to learn to use and setup Opera but the benefits over Internet Explorer are amazing.
Not only are downloads faster and pages open quicker with Opera you will also benefit from the fact that it is the most safe and secure browser to be offered on the Internet. The only drawbacks that I have experienced with Opera is once in a while I run into a website that does not display properly and you cannot use Opera on Microsoft's site to Update Windows. Just keep IE around to do your updates and view sites that give you problems in Opera. I use Opera for all my Internet surfing and find it very quick and have not had a crash since I started using it 2 months ago. IE is so unsecure and has a problem with loading up with garbage and uses memory wastefully.
As to not having a virus, spyware etc. go to Panda.com and run their free Online Scan. you will find that they have a very good virus checker and their scan will also remove spyware and adware as well as make sure cookies stored on your computer do not have any malware. It is best to use a backup scan like this because no antivirus or firewall is perfect and the backup scan sometimes finds things your regular programs miss. I have been running Panda's Truprevent firewall and antivirus program (which you can download a trial version for free) for a little more than 3 months without any major problems. But like I said nothing is perfect so I double check using Avast antivirus, free online scans from Kaspersky, AVG, Norton etc. about twice a month just to be sure. The one thing that I really like about Panda's firewall is the built in Antihacker feature. This prevents a hacker entering my system by using unused ports and keeps tabs on the programs that use my internet connections. One of the things that could be slowing down your computer could be unauthorized use of your system by a hacker or by adware. This is especially possible if you have any type of server running under your operating system such as MSQserver, Linux based servers etc. Hackers and some forms of adware and spyware use your computing power and Internet connection to spam other computers without your knowledge!

There are a number of ways you can boost your PCs performance without having to shell out a bunch of cash.
1. De-fragment your hard drives..... WEEKLY
2. Scan for spy-ware and remove it. (even if you think you do not have spy-ware, use more than one scanner)
3. Try not to fill up your hard drive. I keep mine with a minimum of 50% free space.
4. You can get an additional boost by disabling your anti-virus software when you are not using the internet.
5. Limit the number of tasks that are running in your system tray. (programs that run at start-up)
6. A memory manager like "memturbo" or a freeware variant is useful to purge memory when a program is no longer running.
Thoughts on overclocking:
You will need to go to the manufacturer's website for your motherboard to see if overclocking is supported, additionally, there are several forums available which will give you more insight on overclocking. I do not recommend overclocking unless you really know what you are doing as you can cause serious damage to your CPU and motherboard. Overclocking causes the CPU to run hotter, and I would only recommend it to users who have liquid cooling systems. Overclocking will not give you as big of a boost as you might expect, you may only be able to get the CPU to operate at 5,10, or 15% above what it is rated at which is hardly noticeable. So, overclocking will not turn a 1Ghz CPU into a 2.5! A PC will perform at it's best with regular maintenance and a little TLC!
Best of luck!

You mean over clock. Only mess with that if you are a very advanced user. You can seriously mess your pc up if you don't know what you are doing.
Fastest boost of all... stop using Internet Explorer. It's bloated. use Firefox, it's lean & you can choose what options you want via extentions (try faster fox extension to make connection faster).
Get Clean Up it's an incredible program, you'll be amazed at the junk it finds & cleans out of your harddrive. Don't be cheap & send a donation, it's a worthy program.
Use Msconfig (google it if you have XP, will need to download). Every program thinks it needs to run at start... basically only you virus protection, firewall & absolutely essential programs need to (like optical mouse).
defrag, yep if it's a pc it's randomly storing data willy nilly.
Check out Pc Pitstop for tests to see where you need to tune up your pc.
Try sticking in a fresh stick of ram. Extra ram never hurts. Just make sure it's compatible with your pc & your static free.
google "black viper" the site is down, but many folks have mirrored his invaluable XP tweaks for speed. Yet another reason to be aggrivated by MS, it loads every service it possibley can, which degrades performance.
have fun

Well I don't Know much about Vista but you may have a virus(one or more), and or malware(one or more), and or spyware(one or more). If it was always like this then it is a problem with the computer you may want to check the warinty if the computer became like this after a wile try Microsoft Security Essentials, and or Malwarebytes' anti-malware if you want to find those just Goolge them. Or it may just be that you need need more memory try getting another hard drive.

Here's a list of 'tweaks' I put together for windows XP. If you don't have XP most of them will still work.
PC Tweaks: Speed Up Your System (for Windows XP)
First right-click My Computer and go to:
Properties>Advanced>Performance>Settings
Select radio button for best performance
This will take away the blue and green look to XP and give it the old grey windows look but it highly reduces the demand on your video card.
Next, from the same window in Properties>Advanced>Performance>Settings, the new window open should say performance options.
Click the advanced tab and then click change under vitrual memory. Windows adjusts the size of the page file as needed but it has a limit on min and max size. choose a custom size and make both of them the max size. You can make it larger than it was if you like. If it was 1500 MB min and 3000 MB max, it is o.k. to make both 4000 MB as long as your system has plenty of hard drive space. This tweak will keep windows from slowing down while it tries to adjust the size of the page file.
Click O.K. on all windows and the changes will take effect after the next restart. If you have more than one hard drive I recommend using no page file on your C; drive and put one on the other drive instead. This will make it even faster for your system to access. However, if you just have one physical hard drive that is partitioned, then don’t bother.
Next run "services.msc" from the run box in the start menu.
Double-click and disable the following at your discretion:
Error reporting- does nothing for you, just helps Micro$oft
indexing service- on the rare occasion that you are using the search function, it will make it a little faster, the rest of the time it is constantly indexing your system and slowing it down
Themes- you know what they are, keep 'em if ya want 'em
Help and support- the "browser" that pops up when you hit F1 key
there are plenty more in there that are unnecessary and slowing down your system, but these are the ones that are completely safe for everyone to disable. The rest depend on the user and their particular system.
Also in the Properties menu for My Computer:
on the system restore tab- you can disable this feature to speed up your system but the windows system restore feature will not be available. When you really need to use it, it hardly ever works. Most of the time you will get half way through the restore and an error pops up telling you that your system can not be restored to that date/time.
It’s up to you, but just make sure you have anti-virus running and regularly back up your system. When its time to do a restore your better off doing it the old fashion way with the CD.
Run MSCONFIG from the run box. Uncheck anything that you are ABSOLUTLY sure does not need to be running every time your system restarts.
for the rest, if I don’t know, I usually Google the file name with the *.exe and get a good idea if it needs to be running.

defrag your hardrive regularly, make sure that the drive or partition running windows has got plenty of space on it. if you havent got windows on a separate drive/partition, then set it up. you should be able to find a tutorial somewhere on the net. try downloading ccleaner from download.com. there are some tips for tweaking windows on www.musicxp.net. these are useful.
