You are correct. It's a problem in both films, but I forgave the first Spider-Man movie because time had to be spent introducing the characters and seeing him get his powers, etc and you've only got so much time.
Spider-Man 2 especially spent waaaay too much time on Peter Parker, and not enough time on Spider-Man. Peter Parker is the alter ego, the secret identity and in a superhero movie we should see how his personal problems create issues for the main point of the movie- him being Spider-Man!
I don't want to pay $12 to watch 90 minutes of Parker being late for work, talking to MJ and Aunt May, trying to cheer people up etc with 30 minutes of web-slinging, those numbers should be reversed!!! While Peter's personal life is very important to the Spider-man genre and provides plenty of comic relief, it's not more important than his life behind the mask. Would anyone want to see a Zorro movie where they guy is only Zorro for a half hour?
And let's face it, seeing spider man beat up garden variety bank robbers is just filler- action in a superhero movie means supervillians, super constructs- things that regular cops *cannot* handle and thus require your friendly neighborhood Spidey to save Manhattan (and be blamed by J Jonah Jameson).
But Raimi seems more interested in drawing in a larger population of moviegoer- women who don't read comics and want a human interest story that just "happens" to have a superhero theme. Argh, the pursuit of $$
The X-men movies have a much better balance...

You have a bit of an opinion I can partly agree with, although I like Tobey as Parker. There seems to be a bit too much emphasis on the romance aspect of the storyline, but a lot of the other issues involving Parker were present in the comic books, and I think the movies reflected that well. Yet, I lament, as you do, that there just isn't quite enough action, and I have heard this complaint before, which I can echo. I have seen this version of the supposed Venom costume, and if it is the one they will use, plenty of fans will be disappointed. While I am not a big Venom fan, I have to agree-they SHOULD use the all black costume with the white spider version as the comic books and even the animated series used. Why change it? I hope number 3 employs more of Spidey in action, and it is possible Raimi has been building up to this PURPOSELY? We definitely need more Spidey kicking buttock, and spewing his infamous lines against his enemies!!!

The Spider-Man films are the best comic to movie films ever. An important part of Spider-Man throughout the ages has always been his life and what he's going through. If super heroes were always perfect it wouldn't do anything for the film. Some super heroes are like that and they suffer from repetitiveness. Superman is super strong and his only weakness is a rock that can be found somewhere in space. Batman is a tortured soul, it's true, but he never has to worry about anything since he is so rich and can do anything he feels like doing without much worry. The Marvel franchises are much different where they must often take a moment and ponder what is more important, their family and friends or an entire city block. If you try to add a story-line like they did with Superman Returns it will be a disaster, since there is no room for Superman's love life. Superman as a character has a somewhat bland story-line surrounded by Superman punching people while Spider-Man has a wonderful story-line surrounded by certain action. If I had to choose I would pick a good story-line over mindless mayhem for the sake of art. As for the symbiote suit, it's okay on it's own. But from what I have seen at Comic-Con, Venom does look better with it on. I was a bit outraged when i first saw it, but I'm fine with how it looks now. Not everything in a comic to movie translation is 100% accurate, but if the director knows what he's doing, I don't mind. Oh, and Donnie Darko and it's primary actors are all over-rated.

The entire appeal of Spiderman has always been his human problems and characteristics.
He was the first superhero with everyday difficulties and problems.
He had to sew his own costume, earn his own money, and deal with the problem of trying to go to school sleepy the next day after web slinging all night. He had trouble getting a date, paying rent and where to stash his clothes every time he changed.
It was the human side (Peter Parker) that made the movies interesting. Of course, the timeline is a bit messed up. Spiderman movie 2 was based on comics issue 50 "Spider man no more" but Mary Jane didnt even appear in anything but shadow until then. Peter was in love with Gwen Stacey long before he and Mary Jane got serious.
All superheros before him were rich (like Batman and Green Arrow) or so tough (like Superman) they never had to worry about getting hurt.
Unless you want a movie like the last Star Wars with nothing much but non stop fights.....

I'm afraid that it is just you, sweetheart. I have been a Spider-Man fan since I was a few months old, and I just simply LOVE the Spider-Man comics and the Spider-Man movies. All of the scenes of the Spider-Man movies are just spectacular and wonderful, and the performers did a lovely job portraying these characters and bringing them to life in the big screen.
Furthermore, I think TOBEY MAGUIRE did a wonderful job portraying both Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the movies. He looked so sexy and beautiful in them, and I hope that he makes more sexy Spider-Man movies in years to come.
Like it or not, Spider-Man is here to stay forever and ever!!!!!

I cant really say that action is what Spider-man is about. I watch Spider-man because he is human and unlike Superman he can make mistakes and be hurt. After the first movie came out I was a little disappointed at the fact that they put Mary Jane in Gwen Stacey's predicament and she survived unlike Gwen, who was accidentally killed by Spider-man.
And don't be dissin on my man Sam Rami he is genius his unique perspective on Spidey is what made that movie what it is: A classic of our time.
Oh and I agree with you on the spray painted spidey suit.

In my own humble opinion as another fan like you, Tobey did great in his portrayal as Spiderman, and I couldn't think of any other actor that could take his place. Comics to movies do not necessarily equal each other, it might be the same character but the stroy and the media are different. It would be like comparing apples to oranges. They are both fruits but of a different kind.

Yeah, I see what you mean. The first movie especially was full of lovey-duvey bull crap. Don't get me wrong now Kirsten Dunst is cute as Heck, but come on where's the butt kickin'.
