i'm a biulder and have done a few of these, everyone is right you wont need planning but you will need biulding regs as when you come to sell your property they will ask for it .
as for price it depends on what it's for for example a kitchen would be more exspensive that a play room.
and it's not just bricking up a window you may need a footing and most garages are only one skin 4" wall so you will need to insulate it and the ceiling as well as the floor, good luck

I am pricing a conversion at the moment, You DO NOT need planing permission, you DO need building reg's.
How ever different areas have restrictions on parking and such like. If you are in one of theses areas you DO need planning and need to prove you still have parking ie a long enough driveway. You can check what restrictions if any by phoning or visiting your local council planning department. (As I have done before giving a quote.) The cost is how long is a piece of string, Until it has been seen, measured and agreed what you want in it. Do you want a door into the house? do you want electric sockets and lighting extra to what is there already? Do you want an external door? How many walls are external? What level is the floor at the moment (Damp course) ? Do you want a radiator or any form of heating? There are so many option's it is impossible to give a cost without measuring and discussing what you want. My advise would be drive around and find a house with a conversion already done, knock the door and ask the people who live there who did it, if its a good job they would i am sure love to tell you about there experience. Hope this helps, but don't rush in.

Marie, You don't need planning permission however i would advise you to get it between £100.00 - £150.00.
Cost of conversation you only really need one wall that's the outside wall rendering for damp the others because they are part of the house would have already been done.
Brick front with window £500 to £1000, a good internal plaster £350.00.
For a builder go on word and mouth inspect his work ask to talk to his clients, GOOD HONEST builders WILL NOT WANT money up front only in stage payments.
Overall cost £1500 - £2250 also depends on what else you are using it for.
Hope this helps

The work will be about 3-5K.
You'll need planning permission, don't listen to the other answers, you'll be storing up a recipe for problems in the future.
However if your house is amongst similar houses there is probably a covernant on it that would not allow you to convert. If you do get permission you'll have to provide another one-street parking space, do you have space for this ?
Its an easy job, but will always look like a convereted gargage.
Like I say, permission is the problem, and don't ignore it.

As many people have stated, you will not need planning permission. I converted my outside garage into an office, and this cost me £1750.
One thing you should look at is "change of use" as this has ramifications for your buildings and contents insurance. You need to contact your local council offices with your proposed change of use, and will have to adhere to fire regulations and such as for the rest of your house.

yeah all in all it will cost about £3000, but shop around. Sometimes it is worth going for the better known builder and paying a little bit extra, just for the peace of mind! No you don't need planning permission, as what you do to the inside of your house is up to you! Good Luck..Oh by the way i will do it for £2500 and you buy the materials, how about that? lol

I don't think that you will need planning permission but you will probably have to comply with building regulations. Contact your local council.
If you approach one of those companies who 'specialise' in garage conversion, it will cost you more.
A local builder would probably charge approx £3000, depending on what you want done.

You won't need planning permission, but building regs is a must. When you come to sell your house people are going to ask for it. Plus with regs you have the benefit of knowing the work has been carried out to a good standard.

You will need building warrant and planning permission. OF COURSE you can do it without building warrant or planning permission but if you ever come to sell the house you or the purchaser will run into BIG problems. It may also affect the Community Tax valuation for your house.
I would have thought that £3000 would cover what you want to do quite easily.
