Oak is the was the most common in the old days for long lasting & durability. Cherry & a few other hard woods are as common now days. Some hard woods like cherry have a more expensive look. Persimmon how ever is most common for couch & chair legs & other average funiture legs & applications.

The easier woods to work with are softwoods like pine, but if you want woods that are much better quality you must use a hardwood (like maple).
