How well do they work out? Are they "kinda cool" or "kinda daggy"? Did you use one of those games that you buy which gives details about the characters and story, or do you write your own story?

Yeah.. I went to one, once. We all had to dress up like guests at a 1920 country house party. My character was a spy. We got the theme and denoument from one of those boxes you can buy. It was fun dressing up and at the beginning but as the wine flowed the hostess had to kind of keep shepherdhing us to keep to the plot. I think we opened an 8th bottle of wine and rushed the ending so as we could drink some more and dance to Garage House music in our 1920's finery...

We did a couple of them. The only problem is that sometimes it's a question of good organization on either the part of the author or even just the players.
We switched and every great once a while I'll write my own. This works great because I can customize the characters for each of our friends. We have a costume contest and talent test. At the end, everyone makes their accusations. Usually we center the mystery around a theme for the evening. It's a great way to celebrate a birthday as I play the part of the dead guy!!!

Yes. Used one with the character details. Was very cool b/c people got their character prior to the party, and dressed the role. A lot of fun !
