x - a = x + a + 4b

Transpose all x's to the left and the rest to the right
x - x = a + a + 4b

Simplify the right side
x - x = 2a + 4b

Factor out the left side
x(1 - 1) = 2a + 4b

Simplify the left side
x · 0 = 2a + 4b

Divide both sides by 0
x · 0/0 = (2a + 4b)/0

The right side simplifies into ±∞.
x · 0/0 = ±∞

Now we have to deal with 0/0...
0/0 can have any value from -∞ to +∞ (including zero). Therefore, there are 2 possibilities.
When 0/0 is nonzero, then it is a nonzero real no. R.
x · R = ±∞

Divide both sides by the nonzero R,
x = ±∞/R

Or simply
x = ±∞

What if 0/0 is 0? Then
x · 0 = ±∞

Again, divide both sides by 0.
x · 0/0 = ±∞/0

then, the right side again simplifies into ±∞
x · 0/0 = ±∞.

We see that it is the same statement as before.

Therefore, the solutions are -∞ or +∞.

-----------------------
Checking...
x - a = x + a + 4b

Substitute ±∞
±∞ - a = ±∞ + a + 4b

Simplify
±∞ = ±∞

Therefore, the solutions for x are ±∞.

I believe you've mistyped this as there would really be no requirement for x in the given equation.
i.e. if,
x-a = x+a+4b
=> (x-x)-a=a+4b
then simply,
-2a = 4b
a= -2b

if x= -4 and a=-12 and b=6

then: -4 minus -12 (equals=) -4 plus -12 plus 4 times 6 which is then -16 Plus 24 which is 8 on both sides.

8
-4- -12=-4+-12+4x6

x-a = x + a + 4b

(=) x - x = 2a + 4b
(=) 0 = 2a + 4b
(=) -2a = 4b
(=) a = -2b

no solution for X, unless you typed it wrong

x-a=x+a+4b
x-x=2a+4b
(0)x=2a+4b
x=(2a+4b)/0 => UNDEFINED VALUE (division by zero)

You can't. The x on each side cancels the other one out.

There is no solution unles a = -2b then x is true for all values

2006-09-19 01:46:46 · answer #9 · answered by Chris C 2 · 0 0

x-a=x+a+4b
so, -2a=4b
so, a+2b=0

If you are solving for x then there is no solution for x
