They are flying F-14 model A's in top gun. aka Tomcats. The F-14 is the last pure dog fighter designed for US service, everything built since then has also been designed to act as a bomber. That is why the Tomcat is the last thoroughbred fighter.

It was an F-14 Tomcat, not sure what version. All the US pilots flew them in the combat sequences.
