I can't answer as far as the UK, but in most areas of the United States, credentialed Special Education teachers are in great demand. Salary ranges vary greatly, depending on the district that employs you. I am a special education teacher in a county north of San Francisco, and our district pay scale starts at mid-$30,000s and goes up to $65,000 for teachers with 20 or more years experience, Masters degree, etc. Of course, this is a very high cost of living area, where the average home costs well over $500,000, so the salary doesn't go as far as it would in a less expensive area.

One place to start a little research is
www.special-ed-careers.org

According to this site, the average special ed teacher earns $30,265 in South Dakota and $53,507 in Connecticut. The range of salaries in the US is from less than $26,640 to over $67,000. Of course salary is an important consideration, but the main thing is job satisfaction. I love my job, my assistants, my students... each day brings fun and laughter, a feeling of accomplishment, and also plenty of frustration! It's sometimes very challenging but never ever boring. So if special ed is something you want to do, there are many opportunities across the US.
