I noticed this in a set of photographs I just took of him. In all of them I used a flash and his right retina shrinks from the light while his left retina always remained larger. Is this normal? It makes sense that something is wrong as he has always complained of having no depth perception at night when he drives and there is oncoming traffic in the next lane.

It sounds like your husband's left pupil is dilated. This can be a symptom of many things from drug side effects to neurological problems. It is uncommon for just one eye to stay dilated though, and this can narrow the field of problems. Does he have any other physiological symptoms anywhere else in his body? Headaches, trouble with muscle pain or weakness, nausea, etc... I suggest you go to an eye doctor and bring your pictures with you. Also try the website: www.wrongdiagnosis.com. It is very helpful. Type in Dilated pupils and it will direct you further. I hope this is helpful. Don't forget to write out a list of other possible physical symptoms when you go to the doctor. It is so easy to forget to mention things when you are there.

It's not the retina that is not dilating but his pupil. If this is the case, it is good that you noticed it. If it is actually the case that one pupil is not dilating to light as the other one does, it could be serious. Your husband should see a doctor as soon as possible!

Your husbands lack of depth perception at night should also be checked out by the doctor. If that can be helped, fine, if not, your husband may need to consider not driving at night. You wouldn't want to kill someone else or yourselves if his problem is too bad. Maybe your doctor can help you with this also.

I am pretty sure you are referring to the pupil of the eye.. the retina does not shrink. The pupil dilates and constricts according to the amount of light it is exposed to.. Should it not constrict, indicates a neurological disorder of some kind. If it bothers him, he should have it checked out and see if there is not some corrective measure for it.

Are you sure it is the retina, not the pupil? If a pupil stays dilated, it can cause problems.

It might be his left eye is not very well. And not sensitive because it doesn't work very well. That's all about light sensitivity, usually people with blue/green eyes are more sensitive.

My eyes are very sensitive to light.
