I drove to Wisconsin this weekend, to see a white buffalo. Which, in much of Native American culture, is a sacred creature prophecizing peace and harmony. This was the third such creature born on a ranch in Janesville, WI -- and we're not talking albinos, we're talking normal bison who are pure white. The odds of even one being born are astronomical, ranging from 1 in 16 million to 1 in 6 billion. I saw it come down with its herd, small and shy, staying close to its mother. There was an immediate good feeling within me, that's lingering still. I feel that maybe for all the horrid crap going on in the world, that maybe there's still room for hope and magic, in something even as small but miraculous as a baby white buffalo. I can always hope, anyway. The roughly two dozen other folks there felt the same.

I was driving home in the rain yesterday, and it was a little foggy. We live on a road with a beautiful, tiny church with this very old graveyard behind it, and when I turned onto the road it looked like something out of a movie...really beautiful.
