When people say heart they usually mean one's spirit, whether you are religious or not there is some ting that makes most humans loving and caring which is why you follow your "heart" even when it's for the worst e.g - having a boyfriend that isn't going to treat u right but u r madly in love with him, following ure heart aka spirit not brain!! (Even though the work is technically done by ure brain)!!

Good question :-)

I understand there have been recent discoveries that show the heart is actually surrounded by its own neural network that responds quicker to stimulus than the brain. This was the main focus on a documentary I watched recently on heart transplant patients who develop skills/interests or memories from their donor. "Following your heart" would also suggest you are making a decision based on feelings rather than a strategy which would be for the highest good.

Start with a hypothesis: humans look for patterns in their world to interprete and understand. Such patterns make a certain kind of sense, even if they're not strictly logical, which is allowable since humans are not strictly logical beings. So, let's follow some simple logic and let leaps happen where they will:

If I get cut I might die of disease and if I lose enough blood I will die anyway. Blood is therefore life. The heart pumps blood and must therefore be linked with life. Also, the heart is in the center of the body, protected by the ribs, so it must be important. So, hearts are where our life-force or spirit or soul reside. Our spirit or soul is what makes us different from animals by connecting us to the divine. Our emotions are also different from animals. So, our emotions and our soul must be linked. So following our heart is to follow our emotions/soul. To follow our soul is to follow the wisdom of the divine, and therefore to be right. To allow our emotions to rule our decisions may not make sense, but it is right, because it is in accordance with our souls.

At least, that's one way to explain the phrase "follow your heart".

Actually it's not always our "head" that makes the decision. If we follow our heart, it's our heart making the decision. If you go against what your heart is telling you & go with what your "head" is telling you, then your "head" made the decision. The trouble w/ that situation is...lots of people don't trust their hearts enough & are scared of just trusting what we feel so in order to stop this unknown feeling, our 'head' starts making excuses that are more logical or more likely to keep us from getting hurt. So we talk ourselves right out of something that 'felt' so right and go with what 'sounds' more right.

no longer fairly. the indisputable fact that we can not work together with the international without our brains says no longer something approximately whether our 'self' is produced by making use of our strategies. regardless of the efforts of folk to link understanding to emergent properties, it maintains to be an unsolved puzzle. How can inanimate rely grow to be quite self-conscious? it incredibly is the sticking factor. there grew to become into an thrilling test the place a neurosurgeon inspired a affected person's strategies inflicting considered one of his palms to pass. The ordinary practitioner asked the affected person why he had moved his hand and have been given the respond, 'That wasn't me. You made that ensue.' asked to hold his hand nonetheless, the affected person lined it with the different hand and held it in place. If we are actually not something extra desirable than our brains, who grew to become into conscious that an outdoors source grew to become into shifting the hand?

I don't think it's my brain that makes the decision. It clearly packs up and goes on holiday when my heart's involved! Hence getting hurt every time. I'm sure my brain just likes to have a laugh at me!

It is symbolic to persuade the intuitional aspect to gain predominance !
Material aspects have to be decided using logic, which can be functionally carried out by brain.
Subtle aspects, involving human relationships, emotions etc can be better handled with intuitional aspect which is domain of the being. Since emotions increase the heart rate, it is convenient to refer to manifestation of symptom rather than to talk in abstract !
