rs. 150 (whatever rs. is). But because I'm a genius, I know that you'll learn more if I don't tell you how to do it.

u have 5 pieces of chain
and 3 links in each piece
so total no. of pieces = 5*3 = 15
so out of every 3 piece of links he have to cut only 2 links and the third one is cut automatically
so total cutting = 2*5 = 10
and cost of it = 10*10 =100 rs
and for welding 15 links = 15*40 = 600 rs
so total = 600 + 100 = 700 rs

By cutting open the 3 links of one piece you get the necessary number of links to join the other 4 pieces together to form a single long chain. So the least cost involved is cost of cutting 3 links and welding 3 links. i.e. 3x10 + 3x40 = 150. So the answer is rs.150

cost for cut the link = rs 10 * 3 * 5 = rs 150
cost for welding = rs 40 (the welding can be done all in one time)
the minimum cost = rs 150 + rs 40 = rs 190

Take one piece of chain, open up all three links (cost: 30).
Use the three open links to connect the other four: A -link- B -link- C -link- D.
Then weld the three links (cost: 120).
Total cost is 150, the absolute minimum here.
(The "naive" solution would cost 8 * 50 = 400.)

rs.150.
Suppose we have the 5 chains:
OOO OOO OOO OOO OOO
We cut the 3 links of one chain (costs rs.30):
U U U OOO OOO OOO OOO
We use these 3 cuts to link the other 4 chains
OOO U OOO U OOO U OOO
Finally, we weld it again (costs rs.120):
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Thus, we spend rs.30 + rs.120 = rs.150, whatever rs. is...
-------------------
additional, initial intuition gives you rs. 200, as follows:
OOO OOO OOO OOO OOO
(rs.40)
OO U OO U OO U OO U OOO
(rs.160)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
But the rs.150 solution tends to be the minimum.

Start with five pieces of chain.
ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo
Take one piece of chain and cut its three links apart. (3 x .10)
ooo ooo ooo ooo C C C
Join the four remaining chains together with the three links. (3 x .40)
oooOoooOoooOooo
Total: 1.50
