The good and bad of a satellite

Satellites allow radio communication over the curve of the Earth. Without them, radios have very limited line of sight range.

GPS Satellites have given us a great navigation tool, so ships know where they are in the oceans, planes know where they are in the skies and bombs know where they are as they fall towards enemy targets, reducing the miss rate.

Satellites tell us what the weather is doing so we can have more accurate forecasts, including storm warnings. Without them, we had to rely on ground based weather reports that were not as accurate or widespread.

I used to build satellites. I love 'em!

The cons are... well, that's a lot of space junk up there. It is hazardous to astronauts. Launching them creates tremendous pollution.

As we become more dependent on satellites, we increase the risk of real problems if the satellite systems fail.
