im doing a research on why music evokes memories. Why does the brain stimulate memories when listening to music. Why do people listen to "oldies classics" on the radio. Is it because of feeling of youth? Can you name a song on the top of your head and name the event that brings you back to it? (preferrably oldies from 20s-90s)

The word used for the process of the brain stimulating memory is "association".

The human brain can exhibit a highly illogical linear process. Association is proof of the nonlinear process that the brain can exhibit. Various sensory perceptions are linked to associated recollections. Emotions may play a part in the process, therefore, association may vary in accurateness. That's my uneducated explanation.

TV commercials depend on association.

I like Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding, but really don't have a memory to pin point it to. Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone makes me think of driving to my exs though. I like older songs not for feelings of youth, but because they're not all about shaking your rump or dem hoes. Just lots of classic love that is embeded throughout time or songs to remind us of wartimes. Music gives us lyrics to relate to or melodies that make us want to dance when we want to. Certain songs have lots of memories not just one in particular like Purple Rain. I'm not going to get into all the memories, but you get my point. How would we collect memories if they're is no music? There is usually something we take to remind us if it's a song or just a item.

Wicked Game Chris Issak reminds me of the night my friends daughter was born. I had just got the CD and I stopped at my friends house that night after work and played that song for him. I just told this to his daughter on Saturday she 15 now.
