My daughter just found out she is expecting. She has had some problems with cramping and spoting. went too the Dr. and she was told since her blood type is O- that if the baby's blood is the opposite this could be why she is having some of these problems she was put on bed rest and they gave her a shot for the baby said this would help I was wondering if any one else ever had this problem cause of their blood type or heard of this

no, thank god I do not have this..im pregnant now....but yes I have heard of this....when the mother is type O for blood...it means that anything "alien" or not normal such as a baby in her womb...its not a common every day kind of thing....her immune system..because of her blood type...attacks the baby....trying to kill it thinking...its like a virus..if that makes any sense...that is probably the best way I know how to describe it...there is good news tho...the shot the doc gave her...will make that all go away.....so tell her NOT TO WORRY...the shot the doc gave her will help her body accept her baby....and that was why she was having cramping and spotting....the reason she is on bed rest is at the moment is due to the med in the shot...takes a little time to take effect and can be tiring on the body....tell her that STRESS makes the med. take longer...Good luck tho....this is not a regular kind of problem but a common one..if that makes sense lol. Good luck tho...dont worry everything is A O K

I happen to be the same as your daughter (RH Negative). I was told by my doctor that with the first baby, nothing should go wrong and the baby would most likely be healthy (as my 21 month old daughter is).

It basically means that an Rh-negative mother can make antibodies (part of her immune system's response to invaders) against Rh-positive blood cells, even against those of her own baby. These antibodies have the potential to cross the placenta and attack the fetus' red blood cells, which in turn can cause low blood count (anemia), congestive heart failure, and even fetal death. The first baby usually turns out ok. But the second baby and so on, it can cause problems and the baby may have a condition known as hemolytic disease (which is a very serious disease which may result in permanent disability or even death).

I don't mean to scare you or your daughter, I just wanted to give you ladies more of on insight on this issue. I am sure things will be ok with the first one like I said and I wish your daughter well as well as you and the family.

yes, my daughter is A- and I am A+ , I was only able to have another child because the father was A+ like me, glad she got the shot, its the only way to over come the RH factor, its that if she is a positive blood type and the baby is a negative blood type or vice versa ,she is developing antibodies against the opposite blood type, she will always need medical help as long as the seed continues to come from the same source.

yes, if the baby is O- and she is O+ . it is not so bad with the first child because this is when the mother develops antibodies to the different blood type. the doctors will give her a shot of Rhogam after she delivers the baby. if she gets pregnant a second time she will need the shot as soon as she gets pregnant, otherwise her body will see this different blood type as an intruder and she will have a misscarriage
