I find ebuyer good but I suggest you go to kelkoo (www.kelkoo.co.uk) and do a price comparison. As for the brand, I'd recommend a Toshiba and wouldn't touch a Dell (I've known too many people who have had bad experiences with that company). I'd expect to pay about £500 for a laptop.

Dell is you best option for value for money. Take a look at their website. They often double the memory free of charge. You do get what you pay for. Some of the offers in the big retail shops look good but my job is computers and I always buy Dell for value for money and reliability - never had any problems in 10 yrs of buying them

Laptops are subject to more damage than desktops - so MAKE SURE YOU GET A 3 YEAR WARRANTY - otehrwise, in a year and a half, you may have a VERY expensive repair bill. (Most laptops only come with a 1 year warranty unless you upgrade - and SONY is AWFUL - they only offer 90 days unless you register (last time I checked)).
Any laptop, make sure it has 512 MB of RAM - more if you can, but that should be a minimum given how programs are used and written as well as Windows XP.

I would recommend "calor gas Terry" at the Queens Head pub in London. Oh and a dictionary might come in useful for you too.
