I'd recommend a good inventory computer program. You can assign a number or word as the item locator for easy lookup. A good software will track cost, price, quantity on hand, purchases, and sales. It should also have drill-down capabilities (when you double-click on a total, the detail making up the total comes up).

As far as which software to get, I don't know. The more your items move (bought and sold) and the more you have will indicate your need for a more detailed (and expensive) system. You'll have to do a little research. Aim for middle-market price (not the cheapo software, but not the top-line software used to track a billion units of inventory).
