Look at it this way, which is rarely discussed.
The United States and others are trying to make themselves independent from oil. Especially from the Middle East.
Take in account that the majority of the economy of the Middle East is Oil.
Now let us say that the demand for oil drops like a rock. What will the Middle East do if the demand for oil is so low that they cannot maintain a stable economy? Can they go back to other industries?
Probably not. The Persian Gulf, Arab Gulf for some of our Arab Friends, has suffered greatly from the oil industry. Oil spills and increased salinity of the water has devastated marine populations.
Other industries are still around but because of the oil boom of the 1970's. have not been upgraded to modern standards.
So what does this all mean? According to experts oil will run out in the next few decades or slow down. The wests response will be to use other fuel sources. This change in the world market will cause economic problems in the Middle East.
So when or if this happens, what would you rather have?
1) Extremist Regimes with Nuclear Weapons and other WMDs.
(example Iran)
2) Or Democratic Arab countries that would rather work with the world community.

First of all, one of the many cradles of civilization, the ancient city-states of Mesopotamia, are located in the Middle East. We owe much to the Middle East, even though we are often unaware of it. Look at mathematics, for example. The Persian mathematician, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Kwarizmi, is one of the fathers of algebra and was also the author of one of the first textbooks on a systematic approach to solving linear and quadratic equations. Heck, even the word "algebra" derives from the Arabic, "al-jabr."
Second, the Mideast is also the birthplace of the Abrahamic religions. Even those not inclined to theology admit that the Abrahamic religions have had a profound influence on Western culture that has been both good and bad.
Furthermore, the evangelical Christians who back and make up the Bush Adminstration are obsessed with the Middle East for religious reasons. Look around some websites by Evangelicals sometime. Most of them seem to hope that the other Mideastern countries will declare war on Israel, bringing about the apocalypse. Then, of course, the good born-again Christians get carried away by the Rapture while we heretics get to face seven years of neverending chaos before we all die and go to Hell. Yay.

true, there is other non opec oil out there, but it is hard to get at, thus more expensive than the middle east oil, and usually of a lower quality. In order to save a couple bucks, that is where we will go first. We do have other forms of energy, but the oil and power companies have invested huge amounts of money into building infrastructures to pump, transport, store, and distribute that oil, not to mention the uses for it. They and their investor backers also spend huge amounts of money to insure that they are not going to be put out of business by alternative forms of energy, or even lose market share to conservation or alternative forms. That is why cheney and bush's energy policy is so in favor of fossil fuel use, and nothing else. that is why we went to war over there, the fact that they hate us and like to blow us up makes it even easier to justify it.

what about the automobiles. and what about the developing and underdeveloped nations. they can't afford the initial cost for the development of renewable sources. even if they have large reserves of oil they need money to recognize the spots and establish a oil plant and then a refinery. it'll still take a long time to finish our dependence on oil.

Have you ever heard of that old saying and it is very true.
Keep your friends close but keep your enemy even closer.
We can not leave that area because if we did they would come here. It is far better to keep them weak and poor that way they can't get here to hurt us. Really I think we really should declare real war on Islam. Then follow it with real war on Christianity.
This religion stuff has to go. It has created war for hundreds of years. It has been the death of millions and millions of people.
