fresh2,
Have you ever been there? It's actually a wonderful place. Oddly enough I was most uncomfortable in and around Castro Street.
I didn't like being there, but then I do have my social issues.
That place is actually great, San Francisco I mean. It can be cozy, there are many places that are "quaint" for lack of a better word, but those places are important to the love of the city. Noe Valley, the other areas where people can just sit down at a bistro set and have coffee with a friend. The typically mild weather, and my favorite: the foggy days.
I guess what I am trying to say is that it's nice there! lol

White flight in the 60s left a lot of cheap property in the city that gay men could buy and create their own communities.
But the gay guys were there because
the Gold rush of 1849 brought mainly men to the city
these men were from all over the world so the city had to be tolerant of differing lifestyles
The city then got a reputation for Wildness/depravity and tolerance attracting more gay men and women.
Gay servicemen and women discharged during and after the second world war were sent to their port of embarkation, usually San Francisco, not wanting to go home to face the shame and stigma of having been thrown out of the services they stayed in these ports.
In the 50s and 60s the press started reporting on deviant San Francisco thus attracting more gay people to San Francisco.
Nowadays it is very mixed and expensive, but gay people still arrive every year to live there.

Wasn't aware it was, San Antonio and New York both have higher per capita gay populations. San Francisco got a rep because Hollywood made such a big deal about the hippie and free love movements of the 60s which were most open there.

I think quite a percentage (between 50-60%) of the city's population is homosexual.
Also does anybody remember "Full House?" Three guys living together in the same house raising a family? Uh, that was SET in San Francisco!

The truth to the matter is, any major city in the US is going to have a large gay population. Atlanta has an area of town that is predominantly gay. People tend to band together in communities. It just happens that way. People are more comfortable around others like themself. That's how you end up with the gay area of town, the Polish area, the Jewish area, the black area, the upper-class area, etc...

I think it had something to do with a war and gay soldiers just settling there after the war was over. I'm not completely sure though. I'll find out when I move there.

I heard that Greenwich Village in NY is almost all gay, too? The thing both places have in common is that they were both big hippie hangouts.........remember hippies from the 1960's? Peace and love!
