US bases its culture around freedom as we were the first 'modern' nation to come up with the current democracy. However, have we put so much reliance on individual freedom that we ignore the responsibilities of the individual to help himself, his family, his community, the nation, and the world?

Freedom is not free.

The rugged individualism attitude of this current generation is really what bothers me most about the conventional wisdom of what it means to be an American. Responsibility is very important. Every action has a ripple effect that affects the whole community. I f we were responsible in our behavior and took into consideration other people, I doubt that there would be half the problems we have today.

Everybody thinks that the government is responsible for everything that doesn't go the way the want it. No a statue of responsibility would not complement the statue of liberty because it was raised by people who respected and cherished the freedom america gave them. A statue of responsibility would be a great statement completely ignored by the population at large.

OK, Good idea, but lets amend your notion by adding a responsibility compliment to the many idiotic acts of George Bush. Bush keeps saying that "mistakes were made in Iraq," but he never adds that he is the one that made the mistakes. Bush keeps insisting that the United States does not torture prisoners without admitting that he ordered the CIA and his hand picked interrogators to ignore the Constitutional Law against torture and just force the information out of prisoners.
In deed, he is the decider, and he should admit that he was the one that made the decisions that backfired on the American Soldiers and People.
How about a little responsibility out of Bush!

I think they should put it in DC to remind our politicians that their responsibility is to the people.
