I only find it necessary to tell if it comes up. If not why even say it, unless you feel more comfortable with people knowing. It basically rests on how you wanna feel in the enviroment you work in.

Everyone at my home office knows I am gay (Even though I am told I am VERY straight acting). In normal circumstances I would not 'come out' to every new business contact I make. If someone makes a gay joke, I tell them I am gay. If someone dicusses their conquests, or some innocents passer by's breasts or whatever; I reciprocate by discussing a guys cute butt.
In most instances, people seeing that I am older ask after my 'wife and children", and I normally tell them I have neither. If they ask further questions, I will tell them why not.

Not until the "small talk" starts, as it always does. I refuse to hide the fact that I'm not legally married, don't have children and do have a person I've spent (going on) seven years of my life with because someone might be uncomfortable. If I have to listen to the children/grandchildren/wife crap, they can hear mine.

Quite frankly, it's none of anyone's business! If it comes up, so be it. If people just automatically assume you're gay, so be it. But it's rather rediculous to have to go around to your co-workers telling them you're gay. When straight people start going around announcing their straightness, I'll start doing the same with my gayness.

Well, I'm just sort of naturally out. My wife's picture is on my desk, and she visits me, and several of my coworkers know her from the gym where she works. Everyone knows I'm bi, and those who don't won't know much else about me, either.

Your sexual orientation has nothing to do with your work. I would say that you should just go about your business without telling them, especially if it's going to cause more harm then good. What would you be accomplishing if you did tell them?

I dont see what bearing your sexuality should have in the workplace, in or out of the closet. Just do your job and don't worry about such things.
